The Port Said Criminal Court sentenced 11 people to death over charges of murder in Egypt’s worst sports catastrophe on Tuesday.
The charges are related to the murder of 72 fans from Egypt’s leading sports club, Ahly, during a premier league match with Al-Masry at the Port Said Stadium in February 2012.
The court, which was holding a retrial, sentenced 41 people to 5-15 years of hard labor and acquitted 21 others of all charges.
Those sentenced to jail include Interior Ministry officials in Port Said, most notably former security chief Essam Samak, as well as members of Al-Masry club’s board.
