109,000 tuk-tuks in Egypt out of a total of two million are licensed: Traffic Department

"Around two million tuk-tuks (three-wheeled-vehicles) are on the streets today," said Major General Adel Zaki, deputy interior minister for public traffic department, adding that only 109,000 of them are licensed.

The Law No. 121 for the year 2008 was enacted to regulate the numbers of licensed tuk-tuks, however, most of the drivers did not issue licenses, he added.

Meanwhile, Major General Magdy al-Shahed, traffic expert, said no accurate estimate can be made of the number of unlicensed vehicles, adding that the tuk-tuks can not be legalized.

In related news, Kamal Amer, head of the parliament’s defense and national security committee, said that 109,000 tuk-tuks out of a total of two million are licensed, suggesting the suspention of importation of these vehicles immediately, pending the parliament's agreement on a law that regulates their situation.
