Egypt's Journalists Syndicate stopped accepting candidacy applications Wednesday, the deadline for its October elections.
Five candidates – Yehia Qallash, Mamdouh al-Waly, Sayyed al-Iskandarany, Mo'nes al-Zoheiry and Mohamed Maghraby – are vying for syndicate chief and 104 are competing for seats on the syndicate's board.
Mohamed Amin, a military affairs reporter at October magazine, insisted he should be allowed to submit his candidacy application despite arriving 10 minutes past the deadline. The electoral committee rejected his application, while he claimed to be backed by the country's ruling military council.
