One hundred and four pro-Muslim Brotherhood university professors and students were referred to criminal court on charges of rioting, inciting violence and disrupting educational processes and exams at the University of Zagazig.
The defendants include the nephew of deposed President Mohamed Morsy and Amir Bassam, a former Shura Council member.
The prosecution accused the defendants of joining a terrorist group, breaking the law on demonstrations, resisting arrest, vandalism, damaging public facilities and faculty members' cars and possessing bladed weapons.
The interim government has clamped down and met recent unrest on university campuses with strong security measures, leading to the deaths and arrests of many protesting students opposed to the interim government. Universities across the country have seen varying levels of student protests, a number of which turned violent and spilled over into surrounding neighborhoods as students clashed with one another or with security forces called in by university administrations.
