100 Fayoum students contract food poisoning

Roughly one hundred female students at Fayoum University Saturday came down with food poisoning after having dinner in the university dormitory, where they had eaten mashed potatoes, beans and yogurt. Some students remain in critical condition, fearing that they might miss upcoming midterm exams as a result of the malady.

University President Ahmed el-Gohari subsequently referred eight officials from the university’s food and beverage department to investigation. He also decided to allow patients to take their exams in hospital if they were not released before the exam deadline.

University Secretary Saleh Gomaa, for his part, insisted that only 30 students had come down with food poisoning, while Hospital Director Hossam Abdel Ghaffar said there were only 34 cases.

Al-Masry Al-Youm, however, found that a number of additional students had been hospitalized subsequent to the statements by the two officials.
