Sisi submits official resigmation to Mehleb

Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi left the Cabinet headquarters Thursday after he met with Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb and officially submitted his resignation..

Mehleb pledged in a statement Wednesday the government would be neutral toward all presidential candidates, and provide a neutral atmosphere and transparent presidential elections.

Mehleb said he thanked Sisi for what he has done for the homeland, adding the Cabinet insists to implement the roadmap. Sisi announced Wednesday evening he would resign and run for president.

Sisi grew in popularity after he ousted Egypt's first democratically-elected president Mohamed Morsy from power after a wave of public protests calling for him to step down.

Now that the former defense minister has left the Cabinet, he will concentrate on his presidential campaign, though polls show he is expected to win.
