Prime Minister Essam Sharaf officially announced the resignation of his cabinet in a press statement issued Thursday.
"The members of the cabinet have concluded their work after leading the government to achieve the goals of the 25 January revolution," Sharaf said in the statement.
Sharaf expressed the cabinet's appreciation for the efforts of all agencies involved in completing the first phase of parliamentary elections last week, thanking them for an "exceptional level of transparency and order.”
He also thanked judges in particular for their efforts.
Sharaf's statement came after designated Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri announced a partial lineup of what he is calling a national salvation government, which he said he looks forward to fully announcing on Saturday.
The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) appointed Sharaf as prime minister last March following the sacking of former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq, who was appointed after former President Hosni Mubarak resigned and parliament was dissolved. Mass demonstrations followed Shafiq's appointment, as revolutionaries considered him one of the pillars of the former Mubarak regime.
Sharaf had joined in the demonstrations demanding the overthrow of Mubarak in the early days of January.
Activists criticized Sharaf's performance throughout his nine-month tenure, claiming he had no authority and only acted under SCAF orders.
Young revolutionary activists have similarly rejected Ganzouri's appointment, citing his previous prime ministership under Mubarak.
Observers believe that the ruling military council appointed Ganzouri in an attempt to end the political crisis that erupted in late November between protesters and police.
