Moussa: time not suitable for elections

Conference Party Chief Amr Moussa, leading member of the National Salvation Front (NSF) said on Monday that it is not the appropriate time to hold elections.

While another leading member of the Front, Hamdeen Sabbahi, has suggested early presidential elections, Moussa said that the conditions in Egypt do not allow for it.

He added that the situation in Egypt is chaotic and that its stability and immediate future are in danger.

In an interview with the privately-owned satellite television channel Al-Hayah, Moussa was asked about the possibility of taking charge of the cabinet. “It is just a rumor,” he said. “The military council first proposed the idea, but I was informed that the Muslim Brotherhood rejected it.”

The National Salvation Front, the main oppositional coalition, has called for the formation of a national unity government that represents all political trends. It would amend the disputed constitutional articles ahead of holding parliamentary elections.

Moussa added that if a unity government were to be formed, it should remain in place for at least a year without the holding of elections. In the interview, he also called for a supreme economic council of experienced figures.

Calls for military intervention in the running of the country, Moussa said, came from “despair and anger as well as confidence in the Armed Forces.”

“I hope that Egypt does not descend into civil war,” he said. “If it does happen, the military should then take to the streets.”

Moussa described the current situation of the country as  “everyone’s responsibility” adding that Egyptians have one president, Mohamed Morsy.
