Colonel Essam M. A., 42, was injured in his left foot by unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle near al-Mashrou' Village while returning to his home in Zagazig.
He was transferred to a military hospital and the general prosecution was notified for investigations.
The incident comes hours after a policeman was shot dead in the same province yesterday. Drive-by shootings at police and army forces by motorcyclists have become frequent.
Consequently, the government has ordered a halt to imports of motorbikes for a year as per a request from the Interior Ministry. Police and army have become the targets of recent attacks since the army ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsy last year.
