Islamist presidential hopeful Hazem Abu Ismail on Monday condemned the referral of civilians to military courts.
“As long as the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces underestimates calls for justice, I’m an opponent of it,” Abu Ismail said in a statement on Monday.
“[SCAF] will be my opponent until it stops this and refers people to their normal judges, especially because it keeps Mubarak’s regime figures from these trials," he said.
Abu Ismail was the Muslim Brotherhood candidate for parliamentary elections in 2005 in Dokki. However, the Brotherhood itself hasn't criticized referring civilians to military courts.
Several activists have recently been referred to military courts for various accusations, like insulting the military.
Such trials provoked those who have been calling for an end to military trials for civilians.
Abu Ismail also condemned the military's recent interrogation of activist Asmaa Mahfouz.
“If the regime didn’t give rights to the people, then it shouldn’t be angry if the people took the rights by themselves,” Abu Ismail said.
