Govt relinquishes the management of the electricity sector

The government has approved a draft law to limit its role to regulating and monitoring the electricity sector as opposed to managing it directly. The law forms an independent body to improve the service and meet the increasing demand.

The new body will create the right climate to attract investments in the electricity sector and prevent monopoly.

The Electricity Regulatory and Consumer Protection Authority will continue to ensure a balanced relationship between the consumers and the service providers.

The new body will separate the power generation process from the distribution process in order to ensure free competition. It will also observe rules applicable in the global electricity facilities in order to facilitate the interconnecting of the Egyptian grid with regional networks.

Officials also hope the new authority will improve efficiency, preserve natural resources and observe the real economic cost of providing the service.
