Expanding the amendments of the election laws will lead to postponing the elections for a longer period and threatens the completion of the third and final step of the future roadmap, said Free Egyptians Party spokesman Shehab Wagih in a press conference Monday.
Wagih called on political parties to unify their demand regarding the demarcation of constituencies and reiterated his party's refusal of the proposal which allocates 40 percent for lists system, 40 percent for independent candidates and 20 percent for special categories. He demanded a fair division of the electoral districts in accordance with the Constitution.
The disagreements between parties will lead to endless conflicts, Wagih said, pointing out that the Free Egyptians Party is negotiating with other parties over the party's proposal on conducting the elections using the absolute lists system and increasing the number of lists to eight instead of four so that each includes 15 seats. Five seats on each list will be dedicated to youth, instead of two in the current law, according to Wagih.
He also suggested an increase in the House of Representatives seats to 600, as well as an increase in the number of single-winner seats within the 600, to 40 percent.
The insistence each party has on its proposal hinders the social dialogue headed by Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb, said Wagih.
