The fire department at the Interior Ministry has managed to control a fire that erupted in the walls of the Karnak Temple Complex Tuesday.
Police said that fire started in trees surrounding the walls of the temple. Part of the wall was destroyed by the fire.
The police added that the firefighters controlled the fire before it reached the temple itself.
The complex is one of Egypt’s largest archeological sites. It contains temples dedicated to various deities, a sacred lake used for religious ceremonies, and an obelisk. Avenues in the complex are lined with sphinxes.
Prosecutors investigated the site of the fire and ordered a committee from the monuments authority to estimate the losses caused by the fire.
Mansour Borake, the general supervisor of monuments in Luxor, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the fire did not cause significant losses, adding that the wall is far from all the monuments contained in the complex.
