Death sentence of Brotherhood leaders sent to Grand Mufti to approve

The Giza Criminal Court on Thursday sent the death sentence issued against 14 Brotherhood members to the grand Mufti to approve.

They are convicted of inciting violence and killing citizens in the vicinity of the Al-Istiqama Mosque in Giza in the wake of the 30 June uprising that toppled President Mohamed Morsy.

The defendants include Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie and leading figures Mohamed al-Beltagy, Essam al-Erian, Assem Abdel Maged, Safwat Hegazy, Ezzat Gouda, Anwar Shaltout, al-Husseini Antar Mahrous, Essam Rashwan, Mohamed Gomaa Hussein, Abdel Razek Mahmoud, Azab Mostafa Yakout, Bassem Ouda, the former Minister of Supply and Mohammad Talha Radwan.

Foreign governments and international rights groups have criticized the trials against the Muslim Brotherhood, arguing they merely a means for the political elite to crush the only viable political opposition.
