Leading member of Egypt's Revolutionary Socialists, prominent labour lawyer Haytham Mohamadein is currently being detained by the army, the group announced on Thursday.
Mohamadein, member of El-Nadim Center for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence, an Egyptian NGO that provides medical and legal care to the victims of human rights violations, was arrested at a military check point when he was on his way from Cairo to Suez on Thursday. He was, reportedly, on his way to Suez to meet with representatives of factory workers for legal counseling.
The charges against Mohamadein are yet to be announced by the military.
Egypt's Revolutionary Socialists Facebook page posted that Mohamadein has reportedly faced "forged" charges of "attacking an army soldier on duty".
Mohamadein appeared on Al Jazeera Mubasher Misr channel, Friday of last week, in an interview during which he blatantly expressed his opposition to what he called the "military leadership" of Egypt's interim government. He has also described the military as a hinderance to the path of the revolution and its legitimate demands.
“General Abdel Fattah El-Sisi is leading a counter-revolution under the cover of suppressing Islamists in the streets,” he said during the interview. “The Mubarak regime is being revived again.
Egypt's Revolutionary Socialists took part in 30 June protests against ousted President Mohamed Morsy. However, the group has been a strong critic of the military's involvement in Egypt's political life, announcing that it is opposed to the rule of either the military and Morsy.
