Lawyer Ali Abdelaal was elected as parliamentary speaker on late Sunday following the House of Represetnatives' opening session, which ushered in Egypt's first parliament in three years.
Abdelaal, 68, was elected speaker after winning 401 out of 585 votes through a secret ballot.
A constitutional law professor at Ain Shams University, Abdelaal was seen as having the best chances for winning after being elected as a member of parliament through the For the Love of Egypt electoral alliance (FLE). Abdelaal won the nomination for speaker through FLE's pro-state Support Egypt coalition.
Abdelaal was a former member of the assembly that laid down the final draft of Egypt’s current Constitution in 2014.
