A series of explosions have rocked a street outside Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim's home in eastern Cairo, Al-Masry Al-Youm reported quoting security sources, in what is widely being called an assassination attempt.
Preliminary reports suggest a car bomb or timed device may have targeted the minister as his convoy left for work in downtown Cairo.
It is unclear who was responsible for the attack.
The injury toll has increased to 21, according to Egypt's ambulance chief Ahmed al-Ansari.
Ten people were taken to Nasr City Insurance hospital, and another 11 taken to Agouza's police hospital, Ansari stated, adding that injuries included burns and broken bones.
Health Ministry sources earlier said five security officers, two women and a minor were injured in the attack.
While Al-Masry Al-Youm earlier reported that two of the minister's guards were killed, Reuters instead said two assailants had been killed in the attack.
Details of the incident are still emerging.
A high-ranking security source told Al-Masry Al-Youm "two consecutive explosions" struck the street outside the minister's home.
State-run news agency MENA meanwhile quoted sources as saying the minister's convoy had been moving from his home, located on Mostafa al-Nahhas street, when the bombs went off.
Ibrahim was taken home by an armoured vehicle following the blasts, the source added.
State television said the bomb was probably thrown from a nearby building or rooftop.
The explosion went off outside the minister's residence on Mostafa al-Nahhas street in Nasr City, east Cairo.
Sources added that the blast resulted in an unknown number of casualties and damage to cars in the surrounding area.
Al-Masry Al-Youm confirmed the minister and his security crew are safe following the incident.
