The Giza pyramids, Sphinx and Cairo Tower were lightened up in orange on Wednesday within efforts by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) to raise awareness and put an end to violence and human rights violations against women and girls.
A press release by UN Women on Thursday said that the historical monuments were lightened up in orange at the end of a 16-day campaign to end gender-based violence. Starting from 25 November to 10 December, which marks the international human rights day, the campaign targeted end for violations against women’s human rights which affects around one of every three women worldwide.
The event came as part of the UN calls to “Orange Your Neighborhood” which started on 25 November worldwide targeting violence-free future for women and girls through people dressed in orange and tying orange ribbons on landmarks in efforts to raise awareness about the cause.
This year’s theme “Orange Your Neighborhood” is considered part of the UN Secretary General’s campaign Ban Ki Moon to unite seeking end to violence against women, which was linked to the 16-day campaign.
Violence against women and girls has become a serious problem that could be solved at time when world prepares to celebrate in 2015 the 20th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action, the end of the Millennium Development Goals and framing of a new bold global development agenda, the release added.
